The Department of Health, Human Services, and Public Policy (HHSPP) at Cal State Monterey Bay is seeking a full-time academic year tenure-track assistant professor who will collaborate with faculty and staff colleagues in advancing the departments mission of teaching, research, and service. The candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning in public health and related subfields including but not limited to health policy and management, health and social services evaluation, epidemiology, or environmental health/impacts of climate change on health. The candidate must also demonstrate a record of (or potential for) meaningful and relevant scholarship and the ability to mentor undergraduate students in applied research methods.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Health, Human Services, and Public Policy (HHSPP) is dedicated to educating future health and human services professionals to serve Californias diverse communities. Our graduates become leaders who advance equitable access to health and social services, improve outcomes, and strengthen the wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities.

Through a studentcentered pedagogy, community engagement, and applied scholarship, HHSPP prepares students to expand their knowledge and skills in collaboration with community organizations and public agencies. Guided by a commitment to equity, social justice, and ethical practice, our programs empower students to become effective agents of social change.

The department currently offers the Collaborative Health and Human Services (CHHS) Bachelor of Science degree, a distinctive transdisciplinary program integrating common aspects of the fields of public health, social work, and public administration/nonprofit management into a core curriculum that connects academic theory with realworld practice, helping students develop holistic and collaborative approaches to addressing complex social issues that defy traditional, siloed disciplines. Students complete the interdisciplinary core courses and then select a concentration in Public Health, Public Administration, Social Work, or a twofield Interdisciplinary concentration. This novel approach allows faculty and students to work together to explore new ways of knowing and practicing within the dynamic contexts of 21stcentury health and human services.

The department also provides five minor degree programs in Community Health Education, Environmental Health Policy, International Health Policy, Nonprofit Management, and Social Work for students across campus, and is actively developing new degree programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and a Master of Public Health, as resources become available.

To ensure a fully engaged faculty and student community, program courses are primarily offered through facetoface classroom experiences, with some hybrid course delivery formats provided to support diverse student learning. Importantly, the department emphasizes excellence in teaching and learning, as it is paramount to our goals of student education and leadership development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

General responsibilities include developing and delivering courses; advising students; participating in departmental and university committees; developing relationships with local and regional agencies to explore student experiential learning or internship opportunities and applied research projects; identifying potential external funding sources for applied research projects, including public or private grants or contracts; and collaborating with academic and practice colleagues on research initiatives and publishing research findings through peerreviewed journals and/or government reports and other responsibilities consistent with the mission of the University, College, and Department needs.

The successful candidate will teach key undergraduate courses in the CHHS program including, but not limited to, interdisciplinary core courses, introduction to public health; communitybased participatory research methods; multicultural health education, global womens health, program planning and evaluation; health disparities and social justice; principles of epidemiology; social epidemiology; grant writing; capstone seminar; and internship seminar. They will also develop innovative teaching and learning techniques that engage students in the use of technology, handson practice and problem solving approaches.

The candidate must be able to teach inperson classes on campus and be competent to deliver aspects of the curriculum online, as needed.

Summer teaching through the Department and evaluation research opportunities through our Institute for Community Collaborative Studies (ICCS) are also available with an additional contract.

Collaborate with department colleagues in the continued improvement and evolution of the interdisciplinary undergraduate health and human services curriculum

Develop relationships with local and regional community leaders in the public and nonprofit health and social service sectors for applied research projects

Collaborate with ICCS faculty and staff on applied research projects that evaluate health and social services, policies, and practices, and promote the dissemination of findings through peerreviewed journals and government reports.

Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community, including curriculum and program assessment, strategic planning, development of new programs, and grant writing to supplement campus resources

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Earned doctorate from an accredited university by time of appointment; degree focus in public health or a related field, including but not limited to community health, health policy and administration, and health and social services program evaluation.

Evidence of excellence in teaching in public health, program planning and evaluation, and applied research methods

Demonstrated ability to teach, advise, and mentor students from diverse backgrounds and identities, including varied ages, socioeconomic, ethnic, cultural, and academic backgrounds

Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with academic and professional colleagues from diverse backgrounds including varied ages, socioeconomic, ethnic, cultural, and academic backgrounds

Evidence of the ability to conduct applied research and publish in peer-reviewed journals

Demonstrated commitment to a work environment that values collaboration and shared goals, humility and mutual respect, open communication, and a focus on the faculty, staff and students collective success.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Professional and/or leadership experience in the public health or nonprofit healthcare sectors

Preferred secondary areas of expertise include: evaluation research, quantitative and/or qualitative methods, communitybased participatory research, intersection between public health and social services, or health and social policy analysis
